2004.12.1-4  The 14th Asian School on Computer Science: Advanced Topics on Internet Technology

Date : 1-4 December 2003
Venue : Asian Institute of Technology(AIT), Pathumthani, Thailand
Sponsor: AIT, INRIA and the French Government

The Asian School of Computer Science is conducted annually by Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand and Institut National de Recherche enInformatique et en Automatique (INRIA), France. The purpose of the school is to provide short courses conducted by leading experts in computer science enabling local participations from the Asia Pacific region.

The 14th Asian School on Computer Science is a one-week graduate course concentrating on the Advanced Topics on Internet Technology. The course will cover 4 interesting research topics, High Performance Protocol Architecture, Multicast Communications, Audio over the Internet, Internet Measurement and Traffic Analysis. The course will be given by leading researchers from the
PLANETE research group, INRIA which is a leading research institution carrying out many important research works to the Internet research community.

Topics:
(1) High Performance Protocol Architecture by Walid Dabbous
In this course, we will present classical transmission control protocols such as TCP and the alternative protocols. We study in particular the impact of the layered model on performance and discuss the Application Level Framing approach to design multimedia network applications.
(2) Multicast Communications by Walid Dabbous
In this course we will present the multicast routing protocols proposed to support the multipoint to multipoint communications (IGMP ,DVMRP, PIM-DM and PIM-SM). We also present some reliable multicast protocols and congestion control mechanisms for multimedia applications.
(3) Audio over the Internet by Chadi Barakat
In last years we have experienced a fast increase in the volume of audio traffic over the Internet. Historically for data applications, the Internet provides a simple best-effort service without any guarantee in terms of delay, losses and jitter, which is not suitable for audio applications, especially interactive ones. To solve the problem, one trend has been to improve the service provided by the Internet by
introducing QoS   mechanisms. This trend requires change at different places in the network and cooperation among operators which is not an easy task.
The second trend has been to make the audio applications intelligent so that they can adapt their behavior to the best-effort Internet service. It is this second trend that we will address in this course. We will overview the different solutions that have been proposed to improve the audio quality in a best-effort environment. We will also overview the protocols that have been proposed to support an audio over IP service and an interoperability with telephonic networks. Our focus will be mainly on the Real Time Protocol and on the Session Initiation Protocol.

(4) Internet Measurement and Traffic Analysis by Chadi Barakat
The Internet has become a network of huge size that no person is able to control. Operators and end users are more and more in need for techniques to measure the traffic in the Internet, to infer its topology, to evaluate the performance of applications, and to detect any anomaly. The domain of Internet Measurement and Traffic Analysis has gained lot of importance the last years and most of the research labs in the world have activities in this direction. In this course, we summarize the different techniques used to monitor the Internet as well as the main tools. We mainly focus on the passive and active measurement approaches and we give examples of each one.
Then, we present an analysis of Internet traffic based on real measurements together with an overview of the models for Internet traffic. The course contains a refresh on the main protocols of the Internet and on the theoretical and statistical tools required to analyze the data collected by measurements.

Multi-vendors Won the Public Tenders Offered by the NCHC, Taiwan

On August 25, 2003, the NCHC, Taiwan concluded its public tender for equipment to implement a new high-speed, hybrid network, TWAREN.  This follows the offer tendered earlier in July for its circuits.  TWAREN is a new network built with technologies based on 10 GbE and DWDM.  The bids for a dual-circuit, backbone design, are separately won by two local fixed network operators.  An alliance formed by Cisco and IBM wins the bids for equipment for about 14
million US dollars.  A twin project, KING, focusing on grid computing and knowledge discoveries will be a major driver to bring scientific applications on ramp.  Both TWAREN and KING are part of a major program entrusted to the NCHC for deployment and implementation. Total outlay for the twin-project is about 100 million US dollars for the six-year span.  The public tenders drew competitors from carriers and vendors worldwide.

IPv6 Workshop to be held in Malaysia

NARC and NECTEC Signs MoU

28 May 2003, 11:00 am JST

National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) of Japan and the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC) <http://www.nectec.or.th>  of Thailand signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on Agroinformatics, Bioinformatics and Geo-informatics.
The official ceremony was held today at 11:00am JST, using a video-conferencing facility between the two institutes.

NECTEC and NARC have been exchanging information for about three years through the activities of Asia-Pacific Advanced Network (APAN)
/  as well as Asian Federation of Information Technology in Agriculture (AFITA) http://www.jsai.or.jp/afita/.  The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Research Network (MAFFIN) provides the network services to NARC. The main objective of the collaboration is in the areas of Grid application, multilingual and field monitoring technologies in agriculture, and natural resource fields. We expect that this collaboration will benefit not only Japan and Thailand, but also other Asia-Pacific countries/economies.

Both NARC and NECTEC are from APAN Member Countries.  For further information about the press release, http://narc.naro.affrc.go.jp/chousei/shiryou/press/kyodo/kyodo.htm.
