ObjectivesAgGateway Global Network, GODAN and AgWG Joint Session. Access to field and farm data becomes always more important for agricultural research. Collaboration between equipment producers, research and farmers is necessary. The session should assess the state of the art at this time and formulate requests for actions to improve data interoperability through common standards and agreements

1.  AgGateway's Collaborative Model for Identification in Field Operations   Slides (PDF)

AgGateway's collaborative model for identification is presented as a potential, distributed, solution. It has a technological component and a social component: The technological component is based on the Compound Identifier, a sort of "basket of identifiers" that associates an object with one or more identifier-source pairs, analogous to what is enabled in ISO 11783 Annex E-mediated Linklist files. The social component consists of encouraging the actors in an exchange process to preserve all the identifiers they receive for a given object, and to pass them all along, together with their own identifier (if it exists) to the next actor in the communication process. Multiple examples are presented detailing the use of compound identifiers to identify different objects within a farm management information system (e.g., grower/farm/field, equipment, documents)
2.  User-Experience based Ontology Design for Agricultural Data Integration and Knowledge Service   Slides (PDF)

In the era of Thailand’s Agriculture 4.0, Primary Agricultural Development Goals are increasing farm income by improving profit and harvest yields including encouraging farmers to become entrepreneurs. One of the important factors for Agricultural 4.0 Transformation is to upgrade the skills and knowledge of extension workers or field extension staffs and of farmers. Since data is the fertilizer for knowledge insight and decision making, and knowledge is the driver of innovation and business outcome, this work proposes the model of providing agricultural data integration and knowledge service for those people through user-experience based ontology design. Moreover, with this new era of digital world, we also need to prepare and improve those people with digital skills for speeding up their accessibility skill to digital information and knowledge and also for participating in a collaborative ecosystem of knowledge sharing.
3.  Chinese Agricultural Thesaurus and its application on data sharing & interoperability   Slides (PDF)

We aim at exploring an efficient way to share and interoperate agricultural data. In this presentation, firstly we will introduce Chinese Agricultural Thesaurus. Then introduce the architecture and key technologies for semantically processing and opening Chinese agricultural literature data, and method to integrate with AGRIS of FAO to interlink and mashup multilingual agricultural data semantically based on KOSs (the Chinese Agricultural Thesaurus and AGROVOC and their mappings). The results show it is helpful for different language-background people to discover international multilingual resources easily and efficiently.

1.  Use of Open Data to Analyze the Causes of Vulnerability to Food Insecurity in Mountain Areas   Slides (PDF)

FAO, through the Mountain Partnership secretariat, uses freely available satellite and GIS data to study the dynamics and underlying causes of vulnerability to food insecurity of mountain populations. The objective is to identify and assess key factors impacting vulnerability, like population growth, food availability and accessibility, migration and climate change. The presentation describes the analytical model design, the data and the technologies used for the research. It shows how open satellite and GIS data from various providers (e.g. made available by Google, OpenStreetMap) are critical resources for the study. Migration dynamics and their positive and negative effects on food insecurity will be derived from the movements of people mobile phone data and aggregated financial transactions for those countries where this data is available. The socio-economic dimensions of food insecurity would benefit from open data availed by market information systems. The presentation highlights the importance of accessing open/big data to create a replicable approach to assess vulnerability to food insecurity rates in mountain areas using direct and proxy data in order to provide timely information to decision-makers.

A key issue for data interoperability is the semantic precise description. The problem with semantics is that they are worth for nothing if they are not shared. FAO proposed in early 2000 an "Agricultural Ontology Service " to manage shared Semantics. An Evolution of the AOS concept is now realizing in the AgriSemantics community and services. The presentation will describe what Agrisemantics is and how agrisemantics developed in the last years.
3.  Crop Vocabulary(CVO) : Core Vocabulary of Crop Names   Slides (PDF)

We propose Crop Vocabulary(CVO) as a basis of the core vocabulary of crop names that becomes the guidelines for data interoperability between agricultural ICT systems on the food chain. Since a single species is treated in different ways, there are many different types of crop names. So, we organize the crop name discriminated by properties such as scientific name, planting method, edible part and registered cultivar information. Also, Crop Vocabulary is also linked to existing vocabularies issued by Japanese government agency and international organization such as AGROVOC. It is expected to use in the data format in the agricultural ICT system.
4.  Weather data access JavaScript for Agriculture   Slides (PDF)

Weather data, used for various occasions, is essential for agriculture. Twenty years ago, a lot of weather data was provided on the Internet, but each data source provided his own access method and data format, etc. It seemed difficult to use those data together. Therefore, the information research team of Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) developed MetBroker to absorb the differences among the data sources and announced it in 2000. In 2009, NARO team began to offer a simple data retrieval API for MetBroker. On the other hand, sensor network for agriculture, such as Field Server by NARO has spread widely. And now, various weather data APIs are being offered on the Internet. Unfortunately, we should use another API to access another data source. This proposal is to make a template for wrapping existing weather data API using JavaScript, implement for several data sources collaboratively. Then, only change JavaScipt, we can get weather data in the same way
