BioProf. Goto joined NTT Laboratories, Tokyo, after he earned MS in mathematics from the University of Tokyo in 1973. His primary research area was AI (Artificial Intelligence). He was a visiting scholar at Stanford University, USA from 1984 to 85 under the leadership of Professor John McCarthy who coined the term "Artificial Intelligence". After Prof. Goto returned to Japan, he needed the connection between NTT Laboratories and Stanford University to conduct an international joint research. This is the reason why he started his activities in the computer network. Regrettably, he realized that his dream in AI cannot be realized. It was theoretically infeasible. Then, he scraped together his journal and conference papers quickly and submitted his doctoral thesis to the University of Tokyo. After he earned his PhD successfully in Information Engineering, he spends more time on the computer network. He is now the president of JPNIC and a visiting professor at NII, Japan. In September 2017, Prof Goto was inducted to the Internet Hall of Fame by Internet Society (ISOC).
