1  Introduction


Web Map Service (WMS) servers allow use of data from several different servers, enabling the creation of a network from which clients can build customized maps. Thus, the development of a Web Map Service in GMS countries showcases the benefits sharing of remote sensing data among forum members. Satellite image Map Server will be the main feature of the linkage with other GIS data from various organizations using WMS technology. The GIS data overlaid on satellite image, which act as background image, leads to more efficient visualization of information. Multiple Web Map Service has multiple server functions. One server can obtain GIS data or image data from other servers simultaneously  serve to users. Users may not realize that they are accessing from multiple servers.


The WMS map server was setup on Linux, which is an open source system and a free operating system. In this case, the Minnesota mapserver was used for Satellite image server, which supported WMS technology. It is also an open development environment for building spatially enabled Internet applications. Two types of satellite image, namely LANDSAT and NOAA/AVHRR, are provided by this remote sensing image server. The Mosaic image of GMS countries using Landsat 5 images at spatial resolution 28.5 m. x 28.5 m. is the highest spatial resolution. True color composite and False color composite (432) are  available in this prototype. The data from 105 LANDSAT scenes is around 31 GB, covering 5.4 million square kilometers. Low resolution satellite image NOAA/AVHRR NDVI 30-days composite and NOAA/AVHRR 30-days composite in False Color Composite (121) are available.


One of the main advantages of implementing Satellite image server is that the potential of Geoinformatics can be fully utilized and developed contributing significant benefits to the society in general via an internet connection. The application of this service can be extended to mobile devices. The computer mobile device is a new technology and powerful for an outside work. However, it is impossible to store and operate big amount of remote sensing image on computer mobile device. Since GPRS technology in mobile phone which established, connection to an internet was launched. Thus a WMS connection to remote sensing image server is available even when users are at a field site. Users can locate themselves on the remote sensing images displayed on the mobile device, which help users effectively identify objects and understand environment in the field.
