Categories – Asia Pacific Advanced Network

There are two principal membership categories of APAN Ltd. These are Voting Members ( also known as the Primary Members) and Non-voting Members. There can be only one Voting Member for each country/economy. There are four sub-categories of Non-voting Members. These are Associate Member, Affiliate Member, Industry Member and Partner

Voting (Primary) Members

There shall only be one Primary Member from each country/economy
The Primary Member will normally be designated APAN-XX, where XX is the country/economy code.
A Primary Member is an entity, organization or consortium that typically coordinates advanced research and education network provisioning within a country/economy.
The organization that represents the Primary Member shall be one that comprehensively represents that country’s / economy’s interests in fulfilling the objectives of APAN.
The organization that represents the Primary Member shall have the support of other organizations that are stakeholders or beneficiaries in fulfilling the objectives of APAN.
The entity that represents the Primary Member may be a consortium of organizations in the country/economy or may be represented by a single organization for administrative purposes.
The Primary Member will be the contact point for all matters between that country/economy and APAN.
Only eligible Primary Members shall have voting rights within APAN where the weighting of the votes shall be determined by the Council of Primary Members.
The number of votes for each Primary Member shall be decided by the Council of Primary Members.

Non-voting Members

Associate Member
- An Associate Member is an entity, organization or consortium that has common interests in the objectives of APAN.
- An Associate Member is an entity, organization or consortium that typically coordinates advanced research and education network provisioning within a country/economy or geographical area.
- An Associate Member shall recognize the role of the Primary Member as the main contact and representative of a particular country/economy.
- There may be multiple Associate Members from each country.
- An Associate Member shall have no voting rights.
Affiliate Member
- An Affiliate Member is individual that has common interests in the objectives of APAN.
- An Affiliate Member typically represents a community that benefits from the use of advanced research and education networks that APAN aims to facilitate and promote.
- An Affiliate Member is not associated to any Primary or Associate Member of APAN
- An Affiliate Member shall have no voting rights.
Industry Members
- An Industry Member is an organisation related to and not limited to telecommunications, technology, regulatory bodies such as private companies, corporations and business with common interests in the objectives of APAN
- An Industry Member may have an interest in working with other APAN Member categories in researching and developing new products and services.
- An Industry Member has no voting rights.
Partners
- An APAN Partner is an organisation that has signed an MoU with APAN and has common interests in the objectives of APAN

Gerrit Willem Bahlman was the previous Chair of the Asia Pacific Advanced Network and currently advisor to APAN. He was the Deputy Chair of the Board of Governors of the Trans-Eurasia Information Network Cooperation Centre ( TEIN*CC) and a member of the Steering Committee.

Gerrit has served as a Chief Executive Officer and Chief Information Officer in several different organisations and countries. He was the interim CEO of REANNZ in 2018/19, and was the Director of Information Technology at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) in Hong Kong for 8 years and the Chief Information Officer at Massey University in New Zealand for 20 years.

He has been the Director and Board member of the Joint Universities Computer Centre ( JUCC ) in Hong Kong and a JUCC Steering Committee Member. He is the inaugural Director of the JUCC Leadership Institute which is residential event with faculty and members from Hong Kong, China, Australia, the United States and New Zealand.
