About APAN
The Asia Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) is the industry association and peak body for the National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) of the Asia-Pacific region. It is a community-led organisation that strives to connect people, promote cultures and facilitate research and education across the region. It runs two major meetings each year, and supports a large number of working groups across technical and application domains. It is an evolving organisation at all times, as technologies, and the needs of researchers and educators, change continuously.
As part of that evolution, an opportunity has arisen for APAN to appoint a new General Manager.
About the role
The role of General Manager (GM) is central to the operations and success of APAN.
The GM is responsible for ensuring the activities of APAN support the priorities of members and their stakeholders.
It requires watching and understanding the evolution of the NREN and research-infrastructure/services sector, within and across countries, to inform APAN strategy development.
The GM oversees the operations of APAN, including the APAN Secretariat, the Board, the Council of Members, and various committees.
It involves promoting APAN to the wider community – to peer NREN groups around the world, to NRENs across the Asia Pacific region, as well as to industry, to government agencies and NGOs
The GM supports the Board and Members to identify strategic opportunities and challenges for the future of APAN, and then leads the development of suitable activities and processes.
About the arrangements
The GM is appointed through a contract for service, rather than an employment arrangement, with a two-year term, renewed as agreed. The position is location-independent. APAN covers any necessary travel and meeting-attendance costs. While a full-time appointment is desirable, a part-time appointment can be negotiated, along with an appropriate salary.
The position is available immediately, and a starting date will be negotiated with the successful applicant. APAN is keen to confirm an appointment by the APAN’55 Meeting in Nepal in March 2023. There will be an extended handover period, supported by the current General Manager. The initial appointment may include a probation period, if deemed appropriate by the selection committee.
